Artwork Introduction

Subduing Evil Spirits · Sword Against the Wind

Zhong Kui is one of the most iconic demon-quelling figures in traditional Chinese folklore. According to legend, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty once dreamed of Zhong Kui wielding a sword and capturing evil spirits. Since then, Zhong Kui has become a symbol of warding off evil, protecting the home, and bringing peace and safety, as well as a classic and highly expressive subject in Chinese figure painting.

This work uses freehand ink painting techniques to capture Zhong Kui’s imposing presence and spiritual vitality. Rich and pale ink tones are interwoven with vivid vermilion. Broad strokes of red sweep across his robes, while bold black lines flow through the composition. Although seemingly spontaneous and vigorous, the brushwork carefully captures the figure’s movement and structure.

With furrowed brows, wide-open eyes, and a fierce, flowing beard, Zhong Kui’s character is conveyed through only a few decisive strokes. His exaggerated facial features, combined with powerful ink lines, create an image of strength, fearlessness, and commanding presence.

The treatment of the robes is particularly striking. Rather than depicting every fold in meticulous detail, the artist employs swift outlines, sweeping brushstrokes, and variations in ink density and moisture to make the sleeves and robe flare outward. The flowing red garments seem to billow in the wind, giving the static painting a strong sense of movement. The long sword extends diagonally from his hand, contrasting sharply with the red robes and further enhancing the visual tension of the composition.

Using ink to express spirit, and color to convey momentum; seeking not mere likeness, but the essence and vitality of the figure.
