“A Long Separation”
This comic-book work by Mr. Wang Kewei was published in the May 1983 issue of Story Pictorial.
Introduction
Lost Memories, Unfinished Love
Thérèse, the owner of a café on the banks of the Seine River in France, accidentally discovers that a homeless wanderer bears a striking resemblance to her husband, Abel, who disappeared sixteen years earlier.
Again and again, she tries to awaken his memory through shared recollections, old friends, and familiar music. However, she gradually realizes that the trauma of war has erased his past, leaving him a man without memories, drifting through life as a vagrant.
Although she is never truly reunited with her husband in the way she had hoped, Thérèse never abandons her faith. She continues to wait, believing that one day he may recover his lost past and return to himself.
Artistic Style
This work possesses a highly distinctive visual style and differs significantly from Wang Kewei’s other creations. Executed entirely in pen and ink, it is neither a traditional meticulous Chinese comic-book style nor the photo-reference tracing approach that later became popular.
Instead, it represents a unique personal style that combines European Realist painting, cinematic visual language, and the narrative traditions of Chinese lianhuanhua (picture-story books).
Rooted in realism, the artwork draws inspiration from classical European painting and film storyboarding techniques. Particular attention is given to the use of light and shadow, psychological characterization, and the creation of dramatic atmosphere. Strong contrasts between light and dark, together with rich tonal gradations, give the images a remarkable sense of depth and cinematic quality.
The characters are rendered with exceptional subtlety and emotional intensity. Facial expressions, eye movements, and body language accurately convey complex inner emotions. The artist is especially skilled at portraying feelings of loneliness, longing, sorrow, and hope, imbuing the figures with profound humanistic depth.
In composition, Wang skillfully employs cinematic perspectives such as long shots, medium shots, and close-ups to advance the narrative. The work frequently moves beyond the traditional frontal viewpoint of Chinese comic art, incorporating high-angle views, low-angle views, visual obstructions, and silhouette effects to enhance dramatic tension.
The linework balances realism with expressive freedom. While maintaining precise structural accuracy, the artist uses concise and dynamic strokes to strengthen rhythm and visual impact. The treatment of black-and-white relationships is particularly bold, making effective use of negative space and shadow to create powerful dramatic effects.
