Looking back through some old photographs from my time studying in the United States in the late 1980s.

At that time, I went abroad mainly because I wanted to see more of the world and learn more about Western art. I also spent a great deal of time studying and exploring oil painting.

When I was young, I always felt that if I kept learning and experimenting, I would eventually find my own way of painting. During those years, I worked with different subjects and tried many different styles and forms of expression. I also practiced constantly by drawing portraits and quick sketches of classmates and people I met along the way.

There were paintings that I thought turned out quite well, but when I looked at them again after some time, I would realize that they still weren’t what I truly wanted to paint. To be honest, there was also a period when I felt quite lost.

There was so much worth learning from Western painting, but learning from others didn’t mean simply following their path. For a painter, perhaps the most difficult thing is slowly discovering something that truly belongs to you.

Now, looking back at these photographs, so many years have already passed. Many of the things I tried back then were eventually left behind, but I don’t think any of those experiences were wasted.

It was through all those attempts, doubts, and moments of letting go that I gradually came to understand what kind of path I wanted to take.

These old photographs can simply be a record of that time in my life.
