====================================================================

Wang Kewei — Saluzi

2014 | Chinese Ink Painting
Image size: 69 × 70 cm
Mounted size: 80 × 165 cm

Artwork Description

A Divine Steed in Ink, Galloping Across a Thousand Miles

In this work, Wang Kewei depicts Ziluzi, the famous warhorse ridden by Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, Li Shimin, through expressive Chinese ink painting.

Ziluzi was one of Li Shimin’s renowned warhorses during his military campaigns and is also one of the famous “Six Steeds of the Zhao Mausoleum.” Its name, meaning “Purple Dew,” is said to have derived from the purplish color of its coat.

Around 621 AD, Li Shimin led his troops in the campaign against Wang Shichong for control of Luoyang. He rode Ziluzi deep into the enemy ranks. During the fierce battle, Ziluzi was struck by an arrow in the chest, and Li Shimin escaped with the assistance of his general, Qiu Xinggong. Later, in memory of the warhorses that had accompanied him through his military campaigns, Li Shimin ordered six of his celebrated steeds to be carved in stone and placed before the Zhao Mausoleum.

Rather than focusing on meticulous details, the artist uses vigorous and spontaneous brushwork to capture the spirit and power of Ziluzi. With its lowered head, flowing mane, and powerful limbs, the horse appears poised for action. Through the interplay of varying shades of ink and concise lines, the painting conveys the horse’s strength, composure, and restrained energy.

Of particular historical significance is the stone relief of Ziluzi among the “Six Steeds of the Zhao Mausoleum.” It uniquely depicts the general Qiu Xinggong removing an arrow from the wounded horse, making it the only one of the six reliefs to feature a human figure.

Every stroke reveals strength; every gesture captures the spirit of the steed.

This is not merely a painting of a magnificent horse, but also an artistic remembrance of the heroic age and martial spirit of ancient China. Through the image of Ziluzi, Wang Kewei captures the spirit of the legendary steed while expressing the grandeur and heroic character of an age of ancient Chinese heroes.

====================================================================

Wang Kewei
Contemplating the Sea
Ink on Paper, 2017
Image Size: 137 × 69 cm

About the Artwork

Facing the eastern shore at Jieshi, I behold the boundless sea.

Cao Cao was not only an outstanding statesman and military strategist, but also a poet of remarkable vision and ambition. His celebrated poem Viewing the Sea (Guan Cang Hai) was composed after his victorious northern campaign against the Wuhuan tribes, when he ascended Jieshi Mountain. Though brief in length, the poem vividly conveys the grandeur of the sea and the heroic aspirations of a man with extraordinary vision.

In this work, Wang Kewei reinterprets the timeless masterpiece through the expressive language of traditional Chinese ink painting. Cao Cao stands alone upon the rocky shoreline, gazing into the distance as his robes billow in the sea breeze. Rather than emphasizing authority through outward appearance, the artist portrays the composure, determination, and magnanimity that define the statesman’s inner character.

The composition employs generous areas of negative space to evoke the vastness of the sea and sky. Waves, rocky cliffs, and ancient pine trees are rendered with subtle variations of ink, creating a harmonious balance between solid and empty forms. The surging sea symbolizes the ever-changing tides of history, while the resilient pine represents unwavering integrity. Together, these elements create a poetic landscape that reflects the profound spirit of contemplating nature while embracing the world with an expansive heart.

Throughout his artistic career, Wang Kewei has devoted himself to portraying historical subjects, seeking not only to depict historical figures but also to express the enduring spirit of Chinese civilization. Contemplating the Sea captures a single moment of Cao Cao overlooking the ocean, while simultaneously conveying the traditional Chinese ideals of perseverance, broad-mindedness, and the aspiration to serve the greater world.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Ink Painting “Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu”
Created in 2014
Painting size: 75cm × 60cm
Mounted size: 174cm × 102cm

Introduction

Tempest at Hulao Pass · Battle Spirit Like a Rising Tide

Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu is based on one of the most iconic scenes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms: the fierce confrontation at Hulao Pass, where Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei join forces against Lü Bu. As one of the most legendary episodes in Chinese historical literature, the subject embodies not only martial conflict between great heroes, but also the emergence of powerful figures in a chaotic age.

The composition unfolds through highly energetic ink techniques filled with movement and momentum. Lü Bu, mounted on the legendary Red Hare horse, dominates the center of the painting. The dark horse surges forward with bold and expressive brushwork, forming the visual core of the image. Guan Yu and Zhang Fei confront him from both sides, their weapons crossing in an intense and compressed spatial clash. Rather than focusing on meticulous realism, the artist employs splashed ink, flying white strokes, and rapid lines to directly convey the explosive force and emotional intensity of battle.

Each figure possesses a distinct visual personality. Lü Bu appears arrogant and overwhelming, carrying the pressure of a warrior capable of facing many opponents alone. Guan Yu is calm and powerful, while Zhang Fei radiates fierce aggression and raw energy. Their contrasting temperaments create dramatic tension within the compact composition.

The painting primarily uses monochrome ink tones, accented with touches of red and light color, blending the expressive spirit of traditional Chinese ink painting with modern visual impact. Large areas of blank space enhance rhythm and breathing room within the composition, allowing viewers to vividly sense the momentum of charging horses and clashing weapons.

The work combines strong cultural recognition with dynamic visual expression. Themes from the Three Kingdoms era remain highly popular across Chinese-speaking regions, Japan, and among Western enthusiasts of historical art. As one of the most celebrated scenes of the Three Kingdoms narrative, Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu carries broad appeal. With its moderate size and completed mounting, the piece is well suited both for collection display and as an artwork embodying the heroic spirit of Eastern historical culture.

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Ink Painting “Northern Wind (Shuo Feng)”
Created in 2016
Image size: 80 cm × 123 cm
Unmounted

Description

Vast Winds Arise · The Eagle Follows

This work, Northern Wind (Shuo Feng), centers on a galloping horse and a general, condensing a sense of cold, resilient strength within dynamic movement.

The general is depicted in a side-facing stance, his gaze calm and restrained. Though not outwardly dramatic, it conveys a quiet determination shaped by hardship and experience. Rather than focusing on fine details, the figure is rendered through bold lines and tonal blocks, capturing a balance of firmness and stillness. The horse beneath him lowers its head as it moves forward; its form is simplified yet powerful, suggesting both motion and a restrained inner force.

The eagle perched on the shoulder serves as the spiritual core of the composition. With sharp eyes and slightly spread wings, it appears to face the wind, echoing the theme of the “northern wind.” The eagle and the general form a subtle correspondence—one symbolizing vigilance and lofty vision, the other embodying composure and willpower—together creating a strong psychological tension within the painting.

The overall brushwork is primarily ink-based, accented with touches of ochre, enhancing depth while allowing a hint of warmth to emerge within the cold atmosphere. The work does not pursue meticulous likeness, but instead emphasizes momentum and spirit, integrating coldness, intensity, stillness, and courage into a unified expression, and presenting a desolate yet heroic frontier atmosphere.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Painting “Changbanpo · Zhao Yun”
Created in 2018
Painting size: 68 cm × 137 cm
Unmounted

Zhao Yun’s Lone Bravery at the Bloody Battle of Changban

Introduction

The story of Changbanpo originates from the Chinese classical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It depicts an intense and dramatic battle scene known as the “Battle of Changban.”

At that time, Liu Bei was being pursued by Cao Cao’s army. During the chaotic retreat, his troops were scattered, along with civilians and family members. Liu Bei’s son, Adou (Liu Shan), was also lost in the turmoil.

Upon learning that his lord’s son was missing, the fierce general Zhao Yun immediately charged alone into the enemy ranks. Fighting his way through thousands of Cao soldiers, he searched for Adou while protecting Liu Bei’s family. In the end, Zhao Yun not only successfully rescued the child but also broke through the encirclement. His feat later became known as “seven charges in and out.” His loyalty and bravery make this episode one of the most celebrated in the story.

This painting, “Changbanpo · Zhao Yun,” possesses a powerful overall presence, emphasizing the “spirit” rather than rigid adherence to form. Zhao Yun is depicted with tightly furrowed brows and piercing eyes, his expression resolute yet carrying a sense of urgency. Holding an infant close to his chest, he embodies determination and courage as he fights through enemy lines to protect his lord.

The facial details are not overly refined, yet they successfully capture the essential qualities of heroism and composure.

Zhao Yun is shown riding forward at full speed, his body leaning slightly ahead as he sweeps his spear outward, creating a strong sense of motion. The warhorse leaps with all four hooves off the ground, merging with the rider into a unified force full of speed and impact. The flowing ink lines heighten the tension of battle, perfectly conveying the scene of “a lone warrior breaking through enemy ranks at Changban.”

Techniques and Expression

The work is primarily executed in ink, with light touches of color. The red tassel and the flame-like tip of the spear serve as striking visual focal points. The lines feature techniques such as “flying white,” dry brushwork, and rhythmic, calligraphic strokes.

The composition adopts a diagonal structure, with the figure and horse thrusting outward across the picture plane, enhancing dynamism. The overall style leans toward freehand expression (xieyi), focusing on momentum and rhythm rather than intricate detail.

This painting captures the core spirit of Zhao Yun—bravery, fierceness, and loyalty—using bold and expressive brushwork to vividly convey the tension and heroism of his legendary “seven charges at Changban.”

====================================================================

“A Rider Enters the Bamboo Grove” by Mr. Wang Kewei
“A single rider enters the woods, where tranquil shadows arise.”
Created in 2018
Painting size: 69 cm × 120 cm

The composition centers on a classical lady riding through a bamboo grove. She turns back with a gentle smile, her expression calm and graceful, as if encountering the viewer by chance along her journey. The richly inked bamboo shadows form a striking contrast with the solid, weighty presence of the horse. Through the interplay of stillness and motion, the painting creates a rhythmic visual tension.

In terms of technique, the work blends freehand expression with refined detailing. The horse is rendered with bold, sweeping strokes of dense ink, conveying strength and stability. In contrast, the figure is delicately outlined with fine lines; her flowing garments and graceful contours reveal the elegance and softness of an Eastern feminine ideal. Accents of red in the reins and ornaments serve as finishing touches, bringing vitality and warmth into the monochrome ink composition, and enlivening the overall atmosphere.

The bamboo grove is treated with a balance of presence and absence, where variations in ink tone and density create both spatial depth and a serene, refined mood. The artist achieves complexity through simplicity, using negative space to extend the viewer’s imagination. One feels almost transported into the scene, experiencing a poetic journey between nature and inner contemplation.

Beyond its formal beauty, the work embodies the traditional Eastern aesthetic principle of “spiritual resonance.” Through the harmony between figure and environment, it expresses a sense of composure, freedom, and quiet introspection.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Painting “Rhythm of the Uyghurs”
Created in 2017
Painting size: 37.5 cm × 73 cm (unmounted)

Ink Echoes of the Western Regions, Spirit of Song and Dance

Work Description

This work was created in early 2017 and is a vibrant folk-figure painting depicting the culture of China’s western regions. At the center of the composition, a Uyghur woman wearing a simple headscarf plays a traditional dap (hand drum) with nimble hands. Her expression is calm yet radiant. Behind her stands a man wearing a black sheepskin hat and a bright red festive costume, turning his head slightly as he watches with a warm and hearty smile.

Through this pairing—one still and one in motion, one gentle and one bold—the artist captures a joyful moment of music and dance from the land of Xinjiang. The scene vividly conveys the Uyghur people’s sincere and simple love for life.

Artistic Appreciation and Brushwork

Expressive Power of Freehand Ink

In depicting the clothing, the artist employs highly expressive freehand brushwork (xieyi style). The woman’s dark robe is rendered with rich, sweeping ink strokes. Variations in density, moisture, and tone naturally blend together, conveying both the heaviness of the fabric and a mountain-like sense of stability within the composition, creating strong visual tension.

The Grace of Lively Linework

In contrast to the weighty ink masses of the clothing, the faces and hands are drawn with delicate precision. The lines are vigorous yet rhythmic. In particular, the drummer’s slender fingers are captured with only a few strokes, yet they vividly convey the lively movement and musical rhythm, revealing the artist’s solid foundation in baimiao (traditional line drawing).

Color as the Finishing Touch

Color is used sparingly but effectively. The bright red garment and the touches of golden-yellow patterns against the darker clothing act as a visual “spark” within the ink-dominant palette. These accents enliven the composition and infuse the painting with a strong sense of ethnic vitality and festive atmosphere.

Capturing the Spirit

Beyond physical likeness, the painting focuses on conveying spirit and emotion. Through the subtle expressions of the figures’ eyes and faces, the artist communicates a feeling of joy arising naturally from the heart. Viewers may almost hear the crisp beats of the drum resonating through the paper, experiencing the vivid artistic vitality embodied in the work.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Ink Painting “The King”
Created in 2017
Painting size: 63 cm × 86 cm
Unframed (painting only)

Artwork Description

The lion has long symbolized strength, protection, and majesty. In traditional Chinese art, the lion is more than just an animal figure—it carries cultural meanings of guardianship, courage, and noble spirit.

This ink painting depicts a lion using expressive freehand brushwork. The composition is bold and dynamic, with vigorous strokes full of energy and tension. The lion turns its head slightly, gazing into the distance with steady and determined eyes. Its expression is calm yet powerful, conveying dignity and authority. The mane is rendered with sweeping splashes of ink and flying white brush techniques, layering shades of ink to capture both the thickness of the mane and the sense of movement, as if stirred by the wind.

The work skillfully balances solidity and emptiness in its composition. The lion’s face is rendered with relatively refined detail, bringing its expression vividly to life, while the mane and surrounding elements are executed with broad, expressive strokes. This contrast creates a sense of vitality and motion throughout the painting. The interplay of dark ink, light ink, and blank space gives the piece both a powerful presence and the distinctive spatial rhythm of traditional Chinese ink painting.

Although the painting conveys an expansive and majestic atmosphere, it still retains the restraint and subtlety characteristic of literati ink art. It is suitable not only for collectors but also for display in a study, living room, or art space, where it can bring a sense of strength and cultural depth to the environment.

With every stroke of ink, a natural sense of momentum emerges. The brushwork is bold, yet the lion’s demeanor remains composed and dignified. The painting embodies both the expressive spirit of Eastern ink art and the commanding presence of a king, giving the entire work a powerful aura and strong artistic appeal. It is a piece of notable visual impact and collectible value.
