====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Ink Painting “Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu”
Created in 2014
Painting size: 75cm × 60cm
Mounted size: 174cm × 102cm

Introduction

Tempest at Hulao Pass · Battle Spirit Like a Rising Tide

Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu is based on one of the most iconic scenes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms: the fierce confrontation at Hulao Pass, where Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei join forces against Lü Bu. As one of the most legendary episodes in Chinese historical literature, the subject embodies not only martial conflict between great heroes, but also the emergence of powerful figures in a chaotic age.

The composition unfolds through highly energetic ink techniques filled with movement and momentum. Lü Bu, mounted on the legendary Red Hare horse, dominates the center of the painting. The dark horse surges forward with bold and expressive brushwork, forming the visual core of the image. Guan Yu and Zhang Fei confront him from both sides, their weapons crossing in an intense and compressed spatial clash. Rather than focusing on meticulous realism, the artist employs splashed ink, flying white strokes, and rapid lines to directly convey the explosive force and emotional intensity of battle.

Each figure possesses a distinct visual personality. Lü Bu appears arrogant and overwhelming, carrying the pressure of a warrior capable of facing many opponents alone. Guan Yu is calm and powerful, while Zhang Fei radiates fierce aggression and raw energy. Their contrasting temperaments create dramatic tension within the compact composition.

The painting primarily uses monochrome ink tones, accented with touches of red and light color, blending the expressive spirit of traditional Chinese ink painting with modern visual impact. Large areas of blank space enhance rhythm and breathing room within the composition, allowing viewers to vividly sense the momentum of charging horses and clashing weapons.

The work combines strong cultural recognition with dynamic visual expression. Themes from the Three Kingdoms era remain highly popular across Chinese-speaking regions, Japan, and among Western enthusiasts of historical art. As one of the most celebrated scenes of the Three Kingdoms narrative, Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu carries broad appeal. With its moderate size and completed mounting, the piece is well suited both for collection display and as an artwork embodying the heroic spirit of Eastern historical culture.

====================================================================

Wang Kewei’s oil painting “The Tang Emperor Receiving Foreign Envoys” was created in 2011.
Size: 310 cm × 180 cm.

Introduction

All Nations Gather · A Prosperous Dynasty’s Song

This painting recreates the magnificent atmosphere of the High Tang Dynasty through a grand and splendid composition. At the center of the scene, the Tang emperor stands surrounded by court officials and ceremonial guards, receiving foreign envoys from distant lands. The diverse costumes throughout the painting combine traditional Central Plains attire with styles influenced by the Western Regions and Central Asia, reflecting the openness and active international exchanges of the Tang era.

The entire work radiates the confidence and inclusiveness unique to the Tang Dynasty. Rather than merely depicting a historical event, the artist uses flourishing crowds, flying banners, brilliant colors, music, and dance to create the spiritual atmosphere of a civilization at its peak. The scene carries both the solemnity of imperial ceremony and the lively prosperity brought by Silk Road cultural exchange, transforming the idea of the “Golden Age of Tang” into a vivid visual experience.

In terms of technique, the work employs rich and layered oil-painting colors. Dominant tones of gold, crimson, and emerald green build a radiant and magnificent visual harmony. Although the composition contains numerous figures, the structure remains clear and organized through careful control of density, light, and spatial arrangement, naturally guiding the viewer’s attention toward the central figures. The flowing ribbons of the dancers in the foreground add rhythm and movement, while the distant banners, architecture, and crowds extend the space outward, creating a vast and open atmosphere.

Beyond presenting the prosperity, political openness, cultural advancement, and international exchange of the Tang Dynasty, the painting also expresses the cultural confidence and broad-minded spirit of Chinese civilization during its golden age through artistic imagination and reinterpretation. The work combines epic historical grandeur with theatrical visual tension, embodying both classical Eastern elegance and romantic artistic expression.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s lianhuanhua (Chinese comic art) work The Battle of Leyte Gulf was created in 1984 and published in the March issue of Lianhuanhua Bao.

Introduction to the Work

The Battle of Leyte Gulf was one of the largest naval battles of World War II. It took place in October 1944 in the waters near the Philippines. The story depicts the Japanese Navy’s “final decisive battle” in an attempt to stop the U.S. military from landing in the Philippines.

At the time, the United States was preparing to retake the Philippines, which was of critical importance to Japan as a key route for transporting strategic resources. Once lost, Japan itself would become increasingly isolated. As a result, Japan launched a desperate operation to prevent the American landing. However, the Japanese Navy suffered devastating losses, effectively losing its ability to wage large-scale naval warfare thereafter.

This lianhuanhua adopts a classic black-and-white pen-and-ink style, using dense yet rhythmic hatching lines to construct a tense atmosphere of war. The composition carries strong dramatic impact: groups of figures are interwoven with warships, aircraft, explosions, and smoke, creating a sense of oppression and historical tension. The facial expressions are rendered with concise yet powerful strokes, while the handling of shadows and contours gives the characters a vivid sense of period atmosphere and emotional intensity.

Overall, the work embodies the narrative charm characteristic of classic 20th-century Chinese lianhuanhua art. It emphasizes both storytelling and visual structure, allowing historical subjects to retain an epic sense of visual power within limited panels. At the same time, it reflects the strong artistic foundation of that era’s comic art in composition, character portrayal, and atmosphere building.

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Oil Painting “The Martial Saint Guan Gong”
Created in 2003
Size: 180 cm × 180 cm

Description

Red Horse and Green Dragon Blade · Awe-Inspiring Across Thousands of Troops

This work presents a heroic and majestic image of Guan Yu through a grand historical atmosphere and powerful dynamic composition. In the painting, Guan Gong rides a red horse across the battlefield, his long blade sweeping forward as the horse rears up, as if breaking through enemy lines amidst thousands of troops. Flowing robes and swirling dust fill the scene with tension and blazing energy.

The portrayal of the figure is particularly striking: Guan Gong’s face is calm yet resolute, his gaze deep and unwavering. He embodies not only the authority of a great general, but also an inner composure and self-discipline. He is not merely depicted as a warrior in battle, but as a symbol of loyalty and righteousness—maintaining unshakable conviction even in the chaos of war.

In terms of painting language, the work constructs its atmosphere through rich and layered colors. Dominated by ochre reds and deep browns, and enhanced by strong contrasts of light and shadow, the central figure emerges vividly from the turbulent battlefield, creating a theatrical spotlight effect. The muscles of the horse, the texture of the armor, and the swirling dust are rendered with heavy, expressive brushwork, enhancing both the power and realism of the scene.

The composition adopts a diagonal dynamic structure, guiding the viewer’s eye toward the core of the image and maximizing the sense of motion and momentum. Background figures and horses are treated in a more generalized manner, enriching spatial depth without distracting from the main subject.

This work not only depicts the intensity of battle, but more importantly conveys the spiritual essence of Guan Gong’s unparalleled loyalty and righteousness through its imagery and momentum. With its epic visual tension and profound artistic language, the painting holds both aesthetic and symbolic significance.

This work was awarded the Gold Prize at the “World Guan Di Icon Art Exhibition” organized by the World Guan Gong Culture Association in September 2009, reflecting its important artistic and cultural value.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Oil Painting “Lü Bu and Diao Chan”
Created in 2010
Size: 90 cm × 120 cm

Description

Tenderness binds even heroes in times of chaos.
In the story, Diao Chan serves as the key figure in the “Beauty Trap” strategy, using her charm to navigate between Lü Bu and Dong Zhuo, thereby igniting conflicts between power and emotion. Lü Bu, on one hand, is an unmatched warrior; on the other, he is deeply entangled in emotional turmoil. This contradiction between heroism and passion gives the subject a strong sense of drama and tragedy.

This painting “Lü Bu and Diao Chan” captures a moment filled with tension through a rich oil painting language. Lü Bu stands in armor, his figure solid and powerful, his expression complex and restrained; Diao Chan leans gently in his arms, her demeanor soft and subtle, as if finding a fleeting moment of calm amidst chaos. Their relationship reflects not only emotional attachment, but also an intertwining of fate.

The composition unfolds through a contrast between strength and softness: the rigid armor and the flowing, delicate garments create a striking visual opposition, balancing heaviness with lightness. The movement of sleeves and veils suggests a sense of wind and the passage of time, while the figures themselves remain frozen in this emotionally charged instant.

The overall palette is deep and subdued, dominated by dark reds and greens, accented with luminous skin tones and ornamental highlights. Strong contrasts of light and shadow create a dramatic, theatrical atmosphere. Rather than focusing on a specific narrative moment, the work expresses the complex interplay of power, desire, and emotion through the relationship between the figures, conveying a restrained yet profound classical sensibility.

The term “Guo Shang” originates from Nine Songs: Guo Shang, written by Qu Yuan, as a tribute to soldiers who died for their country. It embodies a spirit of tragic grandeur and noble sacrifice.

The painting unfolds through an intense battlefield scene: shattered banners, swirling dust, and neighing warhorses, with figures entangled in violent conflict. In the foreground, fallen soldiers contrast sharply with those still fighting, as blood and earth merge to create a heavy, oppressive atmosphere. Dominated by ochre and deep red tones, the composition employs dense structuring and dynamic movement to convey both the brutality and the solemnity of war.

This work is not a depiction of a specific historical event. The costumes and weapons blend elements from different periods and are artistically interpreted. Rather than pursuing historical accuracy, the artist focuses on expressing the universal themes of war and sacrifice, giving the painting a symbolic meaning that transcends time.

This work was successfully sold at auction by Beijing Poly International Auction Co., Ltd. in 2006.

====================================================================

Mr. Wang Kewei’s Chinese Ink Painting “Northern Wind (Shuo Feng)”
Created in 2016
Image size: 80 cm × 123 cm
Unmounted

Description

Vast Winds Arise · The Eagle Follows

This work, Northern Wind (Shuo Feng), centers on a galloping horse and a general, condensing a sense of cold, resilient strength within dynamic movement.

The general is depicted in a side-facing stance, his gaze calm and restrained. Though not outwardly dramatic, it conveys a quiet determination shaped by hardship and experience. Rather than focusing on fine details, the figure is rendered through bold lines and tonal blocks, capturing a balance of firmness and stillness. The horse beneath him lowers its head as it moves forward; its form is simplified yet powerful, suggesting both motion and a restrained inner force.

The eagle perched on the shoulder serves as the spiritual core of the composition. With sharp eyes and slightly spread wings, it appears to face the wind, echoing the theme of the “northern wind.” The eagle and the general form a subtle correspondence—one symbolizing vigilance and lofty vision, the other embodying composure and willpower—together creating a strong psychological tension within the painting.

The overall brushwork is primarily ink-based, accented with touches of ochre, enhancing depth while allowing a hint of warmth to emerge within the cold atmosphere. The work does not pursue meticulous likeness, but instead emphasizes momentum and spirit, integrating coldness, intensity, stillness, and courage into a unified expression, and presenting a desolate yet heroic frontier atmosphere.

Wang Kewei’s Lianhuanhua (Illustrated Story) The Mexican, created in 1982。

Artwork Description

Fight to the Death in the Ring, Fight for the Nation

This story is adapted from the novel of the same name by the renowned American writer Jack London (1876–1916).

Rivera is a Mexican youth who appears cold on the outside but is passionate at heart. On the eve of an armed uprising, the revolutionary committee faces a shortage of funds. For the cause of his country’s liberation, Rivera volunteers to raise money. Without informing his comrades, he secretly enters a match against the famous American boxer Danny. Despite being at a clear disadvantage, Rivera fights on with unwavering loyalty to his country and revolutionary cause, and with deep hatred toward his enemies. After enduring numerous setbacks, he ultimately defeats his powerful opponent through perseverance and courage, using the prize money to purchase weapons and support the uprising.

This series is rendered in a classic black-and-white line drawing style, using expressive and varied lines to construct form, while hatching and tonal blocks are employed to build light and shadow. The overall style combines realism with elements of simplification and exaggeration, ensuring structural accuracy while enhancing dramatic tension and visual impact.

The depiction of characters is particularly striking. With concise yet powerful strokes, the artist captures facial expressions and psychological states with precision. The treatment of the eyes and shadows is especially effective, giving the figures strong emotional resonance. In terms of composition, the use of foreground-background contrast and rhythmic density allows even complex multi-figure scenes to maintain clear focus and visual balance.

In its handling of black and white, the work achieves a refined balance through bold areas of dark tones contrasted with negative space, creating a sense of weight and atmosphere. Overall, the series exemplifies the narrative strength and formal discipline of traditional lianhuanhua, demonstrating the classic artistic approach of shaping form through line and constructing space through black-and-white contrast, making it both visually engaging and of significant artistic value.

Oil Painting “March” by Wang Kewei
Created in 1998
Size: 200 cm × 170 cm

Introduction

Graceful Figures Among Blossoms – A Spring Banquet of the High Tang

Set against the flourishing atmosphere of the High Tang dynasty, this work portrays an elegant scene in early spring, where court ladies gather to stroll through gardens and admire blooming flowers. The overall mood is luminous and gentle, filled with vitality and poetic charm, as if transporting the viewer into a radiant age of swaying blossoms and springtime abundance.

The painting features a group of finely dressed ladies in splendid attire. Some hold flowers to their noses, savoring their fragrance; others raise cups in quiet celebration; still others engage in soft conversation. Though each figure displays a different gesture, all share an air of calm elegance. Their expressions are gentle and reserved, their movements poised yet graceful, embodying the distinctive beauty and confidence of women in the Tang dynasty. The composition balances density and openness, creating a flowing rhythm that feels lively without becoming chaotic.

In the background, willow branches hang softly, spring waters shimmer, and blossoms bloom in profusion like drifting clouds. Pale whites and soft pinks echo the colors of the ladies’ garments, forming a harmonious palette. Red canopies and ceremonial elements are interspersed throughout the scene, adding a sense of grandeur and ritual, while also suggesting the refined leisure of the aristocratic class. Petals scatter in the air, as if carried by a gentle breeze, infusing the painting with a sense of time and natural movement.

Technically, the work combines meticulous detailing with expressive freedom. The figures are rendered with precision and vitality, while the surrounding environment is depicted with looser, more atmospheric brushwork. The color scheme is dominated by warm tones, complemented by fresh greens and delicate pinks, creating a soft, radiant impression of spring light.

More than a depiction of leisure, this painting conveys the refined aesthetics and cultural prosperity of the High Tang period. It is a poetic celebration of both the elegance of court life and the timeless beauty of women in one of China’s most flourishing eras.

The oil painting March was collected by Charles B. Wang, known as the “King of Working Professionals,” a late renowned Chinese-American entrepreneur and founder of the software giant CA Technologies.

Zhao Yun’s Lone Bravery at the Bloody Battle of Changban

Introduction

The story of Changbanpo originates from the Chinese classical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It depicts an intense and dramatic battle scene known as the “Battle of Changban.”

At that time, Liu Bei was being pursued by Cao Cao’s army. During the chaotic retreat, his troops were scattered, along with civilians and family members. Liu Bei’s son, Adou (Liu Shan), was also lost in the turmoil.

Upon learning that his lord’s son was missing, the fierce general Zhao Yun immediately charged alone into the enemy ranks. Fighting his way through thousands of Cao soldiers, he searched for Adou while protecting Liu Bei’s family. In the end, Zhao Yun not only successfully rescued the child but also broke through the encirclement. His feat later became known as “seven charges in and out.” His loyalty and bravery make this episode one of the most celebrated in the story.

This painting, “Changbanpo · Zhao Yun,” possesses a powerful overall presence, emphasizing the “spirit” rather than rigid adherence to form. Zhao Yun is depicted with tightly furrowed brows and piercing eyes, his expression resolute yet carrying a sense of urgency. Holding an infant close to his chest, he embodies determination and courage as he fights through enemy lines to protect his lord.

The facial details are not overly refined, yet they successfully capture the essential qualities of heroism and composure.

Zhao Yun is shown riding forward at full speed, his body leaning slightly ahead as he sweeps his spear outward, creating a strong sense of motion. The warhorse leaps with all four hooves off the ground, merging with the rider into a unified force full of speed and impact. The flowing ink lines heighten the tension of battle, perfectly conveying the scene of “a lone warrior breaking through enemy ranks at Changban.”

Techniques and Expression

The work is primarily executed in ink, with light touches of color. The red tassel and the flame-like tip of the spear serve as striking visual focal points. The lines feature techniques such as “flying white,” dry brushwork, and rhythmic, calligraphic strokes.

The composition adopts a diagonal structure, with the figure and horse thrusting outward across the picture plane, enhancing dynamism. The overall style leans toward freehand expression (xieyi), focusing on momentum and rhythm rather than intricate detail.

This painting captures the core spirit of Zhao Yun—bravery, fierceness, and loyalty—using bold and expressive brushwork to vividly convey the tension and heroism of his legendary “seven charges at Changban.”
